Sergey Brin’s $20 Million Gift: Tackling California’s Housing Crisis

Sergey Brin, one of the people who started Google, has made a very big donation. He gave $20 million to help solve California’s urgent housing problems. This is a huge step, especially for people struggling to find affordable places to live in the state. This gift shows how important he believes it is to fix the housing situation for many families.
A Major Step for California Homes
Reports show that Sergey Brin gave $20 million to a new group called “Building a Better California.” This group aims to make homes more affordable for everyone in California. People in the state often find it hard to buy or rent a place to live because prices are so high.
This donation is his biggest public gift ever focused on political action. It makes him the main supporter of a larger $35 million effort. Other big names in tech are also helping. Eric Schmidt, a past CEO of Google, gave $2 million. Michael Moritz, a well-known investor, gave $2 million. Max Levchin, CEO of PayPal, gave $1 million. Others like Patrick Collison (Stripe), Tony Xu (DoorDash), and John Doerr also joined in.
Why Now? Talk of a Wealth Tax
This big gift comes at a time when California’s very rich people are looking at a new proposed “wealth tax.” This idea suggests that ultra-rich people in the state would pay a 1% tax on their wealth.
Some rich people are against this idea. For example, Peter Thiel recently gave $3 million to a business group that is fighting against the proposed wealth tax. Sergey Brin’s donation, however, focuses on a specific problem: making homes more affordable.
Sergey Brin’s History of Giving Back
This isn’t the first time Sergey Brin has given large amounts of money. Last year, he transferred shares worth about $1.1 billion to Catalyst4. This is a non-profit group he started that works on finding cures for brain and nerve problems and also on solutions for climate change.
He has also given $45 million to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which does research on Parkinson’s disease. On top of that, he gave $90 million to his own family’s foundation. With another $700 million he gave earlier in May, last year was his biggest year yet for charity.
What’s Driving His Generosity?
Sergey Brin’s recent wave of giving is largely possible because of how well Alphabet’s shares did last year. Alphabet is the company that owns Google.
The company has been a leader in new AI technology, which made its stock value go very high. Sergey Brin still owns about 6% of Alphabet. Because of the company’s success, his personal wealth grew by an amazing $97.3 billion last year alone. This huge increase in his wealth allows him to make such big donations.
