India’s AI Spending Is About to Jump: What Companies Must Focus On

India is quickly becoming a leader in using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Companies here are taking up AI faster than many other places in the world. They are also seeing real benefits and getting good returns from their AI projects.
But with this fast growth comes new challenges. As more money goes into AI and more data is collected, companies need to deal with complicated data systems, security worries, and finding enough skilled people. Understanding these points is key for any business looking to grow with AI in India.
India Leads the Way in Adopting AI
Indian businesses are embracing AI at a remarkable pace. Most companies in India (89%) are either using AI widely or see it as a very important part of how they work. This is much higher than the global average of 69%.
Many of these companies are also finding success. Nearly two out of three Indian businesses (63%) say they are getting good returns on their AI investments. In fact, three out of four companies (75%) report successful outcomes from their AI efforts. They are using AI for things like:
• Making daily tasks automatic
• Getting smart insights from data
• Helping people make better decisions and work faster
Big Investment and Data Growth on the Horizon
The next two years will see even more rapid changes. Spending on AI in India is expected to go up by a huge 75.6%. This will naturally lead to a massive increase in the amount of data companies need to store, with requirements expected to rise by 73.9%.
Many Indian companies already handle a lot of data. About 40% of them manage between 50 to 200 petabytes of data (which is a very large amount). This growth means companies must prepare to manage even more data in the future.
Facing the Hurdles: Key Challenges for AI Growth
As AI grows, so do the difficulties companies face. Addressing these challenges is vital for continued success.
Managing Complex Data Systems
A big worry for Indian businesses is how complicated their data systems are becoming. Almost 9 out of 10 companies (87%) feel their data systems are getting harder to manage quickly. Many companies also store their important data in public clouds (46%), which can make it tricky to keep track of everything, see what’s happening, and stay in control as AI projects get bigger.
Keeping Data Safe
Data security is another major concern. Two-thirds of Indian organizations (67%) say keeping their data safe is a top challenge when they use AI. Protecting sensitive information is crucial in the age of AI.
Finding Skilled People
It’s also hard for companies to find people with the right skills for AI. Over half of Indian businesses (54%) struggle to hire experts in AI. To help with this, many companies (76%) are working with partners or getting help from outside firms for their AI and data projects.
How Ready Are Indian Companies for This AI Future?
While many Indian companies are doing well with AI, there’s a clear difference in how prepared they are. About 55% of companies have good, stable data systems that can handle AI well. However, 45% of companies have less mature systems. This makes it harder for them to grow their AI projects reliably.
Only a small number of companies (32%) have systems that can automatically grow as needed, predict future demands, and keep costs down. Getting these kinds of systems in place will be key for more companies to truly succeed with AI.
What Makes AI Projects Successful?
Despite the challenges, many companies are finding success. The report points to a few key things that help AI projects work well:
• High-quality data: Using good, clean information is crucial.
• Checking AI performance: Regularly watching how well AI systems are doing.
• Employee adoption: Making sure staff use and accept the new AI tools.
• Skilled teams: Having people with the right knowledge and expertise.
Many Indian companies are also setting up clear plans for AI. This includes having a clear vision from top leaders (81%), special teams for AI (79%), and clear goals for what AI should achieve (77%). They are also good at managing their AI operations (71%) and checking their AI performance (89%).
India’s journey with AI is exciting, with big growth expected in the coming years. By tackling the challenges of complex data, security, and skilled talent, businesses can make the most of AI and continue to lead the way in this new digital era.
